Mrs Jana Kline, Principal

Hello Smith families, my name is Jana Kline and I am thrilled and honored to be your Principal! I am excited to begin my seventh year as Principal and eighth year as a Shark. I came to Alberta Smith as Assistant Principal in 2016, and prior to that I served as Assistant Principal at Harrowgate Elementary for four years. I began my career in administration as the Administrative Assistant at Evergreen Elementary after having taught fourth grade there. When my family moved to Chesterfield County, I taught fourth grade at Marguerite Christian Elementary. This will be my 20th year in Chesterfield and my 30th year in education. I absolutely love working with children and watching them grow and learn.

I am a native of Tennessee and began my teaching career in grades 3 through 5. I earned my Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from East Tennessee State University and my Masters and Education Specialist degrees in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Tennessee. My husband’s job transferred us to Chesapeake and while teaching there, I completed my Administration and Supervision Endorsement from the University of Virginia.

I live in Midlothian with my husband and can’t believe that we are officially empty nesters! We have a daughter and a son who are in college but graduated from CCPS. My husband and I love watching Tennessee and SEC sports, and I also enjoy reading, walking, and spending time with my family.

I believe in classroom and school communities and forming personal relationships with students – which leads to establishing connections with families. I look forward to building relationships with our new families and continuing the great work here at Smith!

Daniel Gardner

Daniel Gardner, Assistant Principal

Hello Sharks! I have been a public-school educator since 2005. I have taught multiple grades at the elementary level, served as an assistant principal in multiple schools, and earned a reading specialist and Educational Doctorate degree. I love learning, teaching, and growing wholesome kiddos. For six years I was the principal of Randolph Elementary, a school that serves kids where I live in Goochland County. It was a blessing to be with my own three children as they made their way through their elementary experience. I am excited now to serve the kids and families of the Alberta Smith community.

Sharing a little bit of my personal story, I am married to my best friend, Shannon. She is a physical therapist for children. We have three kids named Caden, Luca, and Nia. We attend St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Glen Allen. Some of my hobbies include reading, running, singing, and doing home handyman projects. I am always interested in learning more about the kids and families that are an important part of our Shark family.
